A single level up is often the difference between the same combat being a dull slog and a pointless stomp. If you deviate from that path then combat slows down to a crawl and becomes incredibly dull. There is a set order you need to complete fights in and need to visit parts of the map in. The game is linear but pretends not to be.

Which feels more like I've cheesed the combat than I've fought it. And I'm not sure why it's so beloved, I was fairly disappointed.Ĭombat centres less around choosing working strategies mid-combat, and far more around setting up prior to combat. I recently completed the game after giving up an hour into act 2 the first time. Was it just great for you from start to finish? Or did it click later or earlier for you? Or not at all? I have pretty complex feelings on the game so I'd appreciate hearing other perspectives to help me nail my own thoughts down. I'm interested in hearing other people's experiences.

TL DR: I found that the gameplay works better when you accept that it's ok to "cheese" it a bit with reloading saves, and that the second half of the story makes the boring first half worth your time investment. Now that I'm more comfortable with the mechanics and more informed about the story, I'm sure I'd enjoy a second playthrough more than I enjoyed this one, and I'd probably even appreciate the relatively dry first half with my meta-knowledge of where those plot lines will eventually end up. The second half of this game was much more interesting. The companion relationships are the best roleplaying the game has to offer, IMO.īut also, a bunch of plot lines that were left hanging in acts 1 and 2 were actually dealt with in acts 3 and 4. Actually liking and caring about my companions now that I got to know them better, it made everything we did together just a bit better. I developed a wonderful alliance with the Red Prince and a terrifying romance with Sebille, and now both are among my favorite RPG companions ever. My companions opened up, we developed relationships, and I got to see their personal quests to the end. As the mechanics started to click, and I was really making progress, the whole game started opening up to me. But man, it's satisfying bringing exactly the right stuff to an encounter when you know what's coming. Like you'd pick a fight with 1 guy and he would summon 5 lackeys out of thin air. Which happens constantly because this game loves traps and ambushes and otherwise hiding information from you. The EXP curve of the game pretty much requires you to do as many sidequests as you can to keep up, and I just ran out of patience before making it past the second area.īut trying again recently, I got more comfortable "abusing" quicksaves and reloading if I got screwed by surprise.

The story wasn't engaging, and it was full of these "gotcha" moments where I felt like I was being punished unfairly by some trap or ambush i couldn't possibly see coming. So I bought it well over a year ago, put about 20 hours into it, and just thought it wasn't for me.
